Mount Everest
In 1852, the Great Trigonometric Survey of India named Mount Everest
the world's highest mountain. Located in the country of Tibet,
Mt. Everest stands 29,035 (8,850 meters) feet high. It was originally
thought that it was 29,028 feet high (8,848 meters) but in 1999,
using GPS, it was found to be higher and the height was adjusted.
After becoming the
highest peak in the world, many wanted to risk their lives and
become the first to make it to the top of Mount Everest. Many
died trying but finally in 1953, two men made it to the top by
the names of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Since then, many
have attempted to be the first to do numerous other accomplishments
on Mount Everest. Mount Everest has been climbed by over 1,300
people from 20 different countries over the years and over 160
have lost their lives.
