Bottlenose Dolphin

Bottlenose Dolphin

HABITAT:

All temperate to tropical oceans.

DESCRIPTION:

With a body length of 4 m. and a weight of 650 kg, the Bottlenose is one of the largest dolphins. The dorsal fin is high with a broad base and slightly hooked tip. The lower jaw projects beyond the upper jaw, leading to what some people consider a belligerent look. The teeth are around 23-25 pairs per jaw and vary from sharp, sturdy, and conical in the young to worn down in mature dolphins. The flippers are kind of long, dark, and slender, with pointed tips and broad bases.

THREATS:

Many become trapped in tuna nets then drown; between 1959 and 1972 an estimated 4.8 million dolphins died that way.
