Right Whale

HABITAT:
Found in the waters of South Africa and Australia between May and August for
breeding. During September to April they migrate south to Antarctica where they
feed on plankton.
DESCRIPTION:
A baleen whale, black with some white on the belly. They have large heads with
strongly bowed lower jaws, arched upper jaws, and are distinguished by callosities
on most parts of their body. The females are larger than the males and are on
average 13.9 m. in length and weigh about 40 tons.
THREATS:
Over exploitation for their oil in the early 1900's.
