Sea Lion
HABITAT:
Found around the rim of the North Pacific Ocean from California to northern
Japan where the continental shelves are.
DESCRIPTION:
Adult males average 2.8m in length, and weigh an average 566 kg, while females
are smaller at 2.3m in length and 263 kg in weight. They are opportunistic eaters,
foraging mostly near the shore and over continental shelves for fish and cephalopods
such as squid and octopus.
THREATS:
The population is going down hill, particularly in the U.S., where the numbers dropped from 230,000 in 1965 to 43,200 in 1994. Now they have declined by at least 18%. The exact cause for this decline is thought to be due to a low food supply, particularly of walleye pollock, caused by commercial over-fishing of ground fish stocks in the region.
