Polar Bear

Polar Bear

HABITAT:

Found around the Arctic sea ice and across the Polar Basin.

DESCRIPTION:

They are more elongated and streamlined for their aquatic life in comparison to land-dwelling bears. Long hair between the pads protects the bears from the cold. The stiff hairs on the forelegs, and very broad front feet act as oars when swimming. An extra layer of fat beneath the skin provides further insulation from the cold. All polar bears are white, providing camouflage when hunting. They are the largest bears with average weights for males about 350 kg and females of about 250 kg.

THREATS:

Excessive hunting in the past has severely reduced their numbers. Now the main threat is due to oil exploration in the Arctic region.
