Geography is the study of the land, rivers, and geographical features. The Gods lived mostly in Greece. Greece is on a Peninsula. It is surrounded mostly by the Mediterranean Sea. You can find many islands around Greece including Crete, a large island. Ancient Greek writers rarely wrote about what Greece looked like. The writers assumed that the readers knew Greece's landscape. It is also hard to study the geography of ancient Greece because of the fragmented land holding. It is tradition for the plots of land to be small and for the names to change throughout time. Greece is mostly mountains. The mountains can be a barrier to communication. However, the people depended on those mountains. There is also natural vegetation, trees, and shrubs. Many ancient cities had farms within the city. Most people lived outside the city in small villages. The ancient Greeks also had roads. The dirt roads were traveled on by wagons. The cities had mud and clay to build bricks. Most of the other nature resources came from around the country in uneven amounts. Sparta, Crete, Mt. Olympus, and Athens are some of the cities and countries that the stories of the Gods mention. Mt. Olympus was the home of the Gods, but they roamed freely around Greece and the other lands. A map's purpose is to help you associate the stories you have heard with the land. The roads, the farms, and the landscape are all part of the geography. The ancient Greek civilization depended on these things.
