These 19 elder gods ruled earth before the Olympian overthrew them. Cronus,
the ruler of the Titans, was dethroned by his son, Zeus. Most of these
gods fought beside Cronus and were banished to Tartarus. The Titans were
associated with various planets.
Gaea-
(earth goddess)
Uranus-
(sky god) He is the son of Gaea. He married his mother
and had twelve of the Titans. He was the first ruler, but that ended
when Cronus, encouraged by Gaea, castrated him. It is said he either
died from the wound or withdrew from earth.
Cronus-
(ruling Titan) He was married to Rhea. To insure his
safety he ate each of his children when they were born. Rhea tricked
her husband with the last child, Zeus. She tricked him into swallowing
a rock. When Zeus grew up he revolted against the Titans. At the Titans
downfall, Cronus escaped to Italy. He then ruled as Saturn.

(wife of Cronus)
Oceanus-
(the unending stream of water that encircles the world)
Together, he and his wife produced rivers and 3000 ocean nymphs.
Tethys-
(wife of Oceanus)
Hyperion-
(Titan of light. The early sun god.) He is the son of
Gaea and Uranus. He and his sister, Thea, married and had three children.
They were Helius (the sun), Selene (moon), and Eos (the dawn).
Mnemosyne-
(Titan of memory.) She is the mother of Muses.
Themis-
(The Titan of justice and order.) She was the mother
of the Seasons and the Fates.
Iapetus-
He is the father of Epimetheus, Menoetius, Prometheus,
and Atlas by Clymene.
Coeus-
(Titan of intelligence) He is the father of Leto.
Crius-
Greek Titan.
Phoebe-
(Titan of the moon) She is the mother of Leto.
Thea-
A minor Greek Goddess. She is the daughter of Ouranos
(heaven) and Gaia (earth). She is the wife of Hyperion.
Prometheus-
(wisest Titan and able to tell the future) He is known
as the protector and benefactor of man. He gave man fire and other
gifts. His name means 'forethought'.
Epimetheus-
(a stupid Titan) He was the brother of Prometheus and
the son of Iapetus. He was delegated, along with his brother, by Zeus
to create humankind. He accepted the gift of Pandora from Zeus, which
lead to the evil in the world.
Atlas-
The son of Iapetus. Atlas led the Titans in battle against
the Olympians. As a result, Zeus made him hold up the world on his
back.
Metis-
(planet Mercury and the Titan of the fourth day) She
is said to be seduced by Zeus and the mother of Athena. She presided
over all wisdom and knowledge.
Dione-
According to Homer Dione is the mother of Aphrodite.
The Olympians-
They are a group of 12 gods. They overthrew the Titans.
They are all related in some way. Their home was Mount Olympus.
Zeus-
(supreme ruler of the gods) He is the rain god and the
lord of the sky. His weapon is the thunderbolt. He is married to Hera.
However, he had many affairs.
Poseidon-
(lord of the sea) He married Amphitrite, a granddaughter
of the Titan Oceanus. His weapon is a trident, which can shake the
earth, and it can shatter any object. He was greedy and had many disputes
with the other gods.
Hades-
(lord of the underworld and ruler over the dead) He
is the god of wealth. He had a helmet that made him invisible. His
wife was Persephone. He was also greedy.
Hestia-
She is the goddess of the Hearth. Each city had a public
hearth. It was sacred to Hestia and the fire was never allowed to
go out.
Hera-
(protector of marriage) Most stories involve her jealous
revenge for Zeus' infidelities.
Ares-
(god of war) He was considered a coward, but was also
murderous and bloodstained.
Athena-
(goddess of the city, handicrafts, and agriculture)
She invented many things for man. She was fierce and brave in battle.
She was the embodiment of reason, purity, and wisdom.
Apollo-
(god of music, healing, light, and truth) He drove the
sun across the sky with his chariot and 4 horses. Apollo was famous
for his oracle at Delphi.
Aphrodite-
(goddess of love, beauty, and desire) She had a magical
girdle that would compel anyone she wished to desire her. She is the
wife of Hephaestus.
Hermes-
(Zeus' messenger) He was known to wear winged sandals,
a winged hat, and carried a magical wand. He is the fastest god, the
god of thieves, and the god of commerce.
Artemis-
(lady of the wild things and the huntsman) She was the
protector of the young and presided over childbirth. All wild animals
are sacred to her.
Hephaestus-
(god of fire and forge) He was the only god to be ugly.
He was the smith and armorer for the gods. The volcano was his forge.
His wife is Aphrodite. He was known to be kind and loving.
