Overview of Plan

The teacher will lead the students through the basics of the Internet, The World Wide Web, and ultimately designing and creating web pages.

Main Curricular Area: Computers

Grade Level: High level grade 8 or high school

Approximate time required: Six Ninety minute sessions.

Goals and Objectives:

First I list those goals covered in this unit that I consider will work towards computer literacy…

North Carolina Computer Curriculum goals that will be met by this unit…

    1. - Research, create, publish and present projects related to content areas using a variety of technological tools.
    1. - Identify the difference between linear and non linear multimedia presentations.
    1. - Create non linear multimedia projects related to content areas.
    1. - Recognize the difference between networked and non- networked computers.
    2. - Explain the difference between networked and non- networked computers.
    1. - Recognize ownership, security . and privacy issues.
    2. - Model ethical behavior relating to security, privacy, passwords and personal information.
    1. - Select and use technology tools to collect, analyze and display data..
    1. Evaluate information found via telecommunication for appropriateness, content and usefulness

3.9 - Use telecommunications to share and publish information.

Materials/Resources Needed:

This unit needs to be taught in a computer lab with Internet Access and a computer for each student. The lab should also have a projector or LCD overhead for the image on the computer to be shown to the entire class. A scanner should be available for student use. Each computer in the lab should also have some paint or drawing program available. Each computer in the lab should have AOLPress or Netscape Communicator (for use of Netscape Composer) available. AOLPRESS can be downloaded for free from http://www.aol.com. Each student should also have a floppy disk for storing their work in progress. On this disk should be a copy of http://members.xoom.com/hartsook/page3b.html. Some of the lessons require handouts for the students. This will be indicated in the lesson plan.

Pre-Activities:

The teacher must download the AOLPress software and/or Netscape Composer and install them on a server that the lab’s computers have access to. As a backup for possible problems in reaching the Internet sites, the teacher may want to use Web Whacker and place the tutorial and a clip art site (or a clip art CD if available) on the school’s server. Of course, the teacher should be proficient at HTML, AOLPress, Netscape Communicator/Composer and have a good understanding of all topics included in this unit.

Assessment:

The teacher will judge progress by the students online test results, response to discussion questions and their finished Web page(s).

Remediation:

Students who are finding the lesson difficult should be encouraged to stop, ask questions, rely on those students who are more advanced on the topics and refer to the tutorial. Remind the students that this is one series of lessons where the final product can vary greatly because of differing starting places in the learning process for individual students. Those who can not get the HTML coding should be encouraged to try the WYSIWYG editors for success!

Lesson 1

The Internet, The World Wide Web and Web Pages - Getting Started

The teacher will lead the students through the basics of the Internet, The World Wide Web. The following topics will be covered:

At the end of the discussion on URL’s and at the end of this lesson the students will take an online quiz on the information covered. Along the way possible discussion questions are provided. Discuss search strategies (Boolean Logic) and point the students to several good search engines (such as www.hotbot.com or www.altavista.com). If time permits, at the end of this lesson allow the students to begin searching for web sites they find appealing. Have them list these out and identify the parts of the URL for their sites for the class.

Main Curricular Area: Computers

Grade Level: High level grade 8 or high school

Approximate time required: One Ninety minute session.

Goals and Objectives:

Goals:

North Carolina Goals:

2.11, 2.12

Materials/Resources Needed:

This lesson will use the site found at:

http://members.xoom.com/hartsook/

and will be focusing on the section titled "The Internet, The World Wide Web and WEB Pages - Getting Started". Before teaching this lesson the instructor should look over the online materials.

Assessment:

The teacher will judge progress by the students online test results. Two quizzes are provided for this lesson. Have the students print their quizzes, if a printer is available, or discuss the answers as a group. In addition the teacher should have the students turn in the list of URL’s they found, with the parts identified.

Lesson 2

Designing A Web Site & Responsible Webbing

The teacher will lead the students through the sections on Web Page Design and Responsible Webbing.

In Web Page Design, the following topics will be covered:

In the Responsible Webbing section, issues of copyright and acceptable use (profanity and pornography in Web pages) will be discussed.

At the end of the discussion on design the students will be pointed to several web sites and encouraged to discuss these sites from a design perspective. Students will begin to create simple design flow charts for their pages.

Main Curricular Area: Computers

Grade Level: High level grade 8 or high school

Approximate time required: One Ninety minute session.

Goals and Objectives:

Goals:

North Carolina goals:

2.9, 3.6, 3.7, 1.2, 1.1

Materials/Resources Needed:

This lesson will use the site found at:

http://members.xoom.com/hartsook/

and will be focusing on the section titled "Designing a Web Site". In addition the students will evaluate the following sites for design:

Therefore, this lesson needs to be taught in a computer lab with Internet Access and a computer for each student. The lab should also have a projector or LCD overhead for the image on the computer to be shown to the entire class.

Of course, the teacher should have a good understanding of all topics included in this lesson.

Assessment:

The teacher will judge progress by their responses to discussion and their evaluation of the sites referenced. In addition the students will be assessed by their beginning design flow charts for their upcoming web pages.

Lesson 3

WEB Page Construction - Basic HTML

The teacher will lead the students through the basics of HTML. The following topics will be covered:

As the tutorial progresses the students will be creating a simple web page by keying in the HTML. Attached are paper copies of what they will be keying if the teacher feels this would assist in the process. At the end the students will have a web page!

Main Curricular Area: Computers

Grade Level: High level grade 8 or high school

Approximate time required: One Ninety minute session.

Goals and Objectives:

Goals:

North Carolina goals:

3.9

Materials/Resources Needed:

This lesson will use the site found at:

http://members.xoom.com/hartsook/

and will be focusing on the section titled "Basic HTML". In addition the students will be shown the following site as a reference for HTML tags and attributes:

Therefore, this lesson needs to be taught in a computer lab with Internet Access and a computer for each student. The lab should also have a projector or LCD overhead for the image on the computer to be shown to the entire class.

Of course, the teacher should have a good understanding of all topics included in this lesson.

Assessment:

The teacher will judge progress by simple web pages created by the students and the results of the attached online test.

Lesson 4

WEB Page Construction - Using A WYSIWYG Type Program

The teacher will lead the students through the basics of HTML. The following topics will be covered:

The students will learn about WYSIWYG editors and change an existing page with one of these programs. As they practice with AOLPRESS or Netscape Composer they will be preparing to create their page in earnest. Included in this material is a paper copy of the lesson for reference as the students begin working with the programs. After the tutorial portion of the lesson is complete, show the students how to incorporate scanned images into their web page. Allow them time to complete the design of their page and research for materials (pictures, etc.) that they will want to include on their page. Encourage them to use a variety of resources (i.e. - the Internet, CD’s, books) in their research. Encourage them to modify clipart or a scanned image using a paint type program, or to create an original drawing with such a program. If time permits, allow the students to begin creating their pages!

Lesson 7

WEB Page Construction - Finishing WEB Pages and placing them on a Server!!!

The students should finish work on their web pages and each students page should be presented to the class, if only briefly. The teacher will discuss placing web pages on a server using a program such as FTP. The district I am in will not allow students to upload to their server, so I do not intend to cover this in detail. It should be taught that FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is used to transfer files from your computer’s hard drive to a server. A good program is wf_ftp95 for Windows 95 (can be downloaded from http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/rs/lias/ftp.html) and Fetch for Mac’s.
